Tie-Dye Cake

Tie-Dye Cake

Who wants to have plain cake when you could have a rainbow in every bite? With a couple extra bowls and some food coloring, you can turn a simple boxed cake mix cake into a showstopper of a dessert (and it’s WAY easier than it looks, but you don’t have to tell anyone)!

Make your cake in team colors for a spirited game party, wedding colors for a bridal shower, or baby colors for a baby shower.

Shop at Dollar Tree — Here’s What You’ll Need:

Easy Step-by-Step Directions:

  1. Mix both cake mixes according to package directions. Grease or line your pans according to package directions.
  2. Divide batter into as many bowls as colors you want to make (team colors, pink and blue for baby showers, wedding colors for a bridal shower, a rainbow for a fun birthday surprise, etc.) and add food coloring to each bowl of batter to get your desired colors.
  3. Pour half of the batter from each bowl into your first pan.
  4. Reverse the order and pour the second half of the batter from each bowl into the second pan.
  5. Bake both cakes according to package directions.
  6. Once cooled, frost one of your cakes with white frosting. Place the second cake on top and cover it with white frosting as well.

Fun Tip:

To create the look of the frosting in the example:

  1. Color a couple bowls of frosting in chosen colors.
  2. Create circles of colors on top of your white frosting.
  3. Starting from the center, drag the point of a knife through the frosting toward the outer edge of the cake.
  4. Wipe your knife clean and drag it from the outside of the cake to the center, about an inch or two away from your first drag line.
  5. Repeat this process all the way around the cake.
