Who wants to have plain cake when you could have a rainbow in every bite? With a couple extra bowls and some food coloring, you can turn a simple boxed cake mix cake into a showstopper of a dessert (and it’s WAY easier than it looks, but you don’t have to tell anyone)!
Make your cake in team colors for a spirited game party, wedding colors for a bridal shower, or baby colors for a baby shower.
Shop at Dollar Tree — Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 2 Boxes of White or Yellow Cake Mix (plus the ingredients needed to make them)
- Food Coloring
- Bowls — One large bowl for mixing the cake, plus one smaller bowl for each color you want to use (for the cake and for the frosting)
- Two 9" Cake Pans
- White Frosting
Easy Step-by-Step Directions:
- Mix both cake mixes according to package directions. Grease or line your pans according to package directions.
- Divide batter into as many bowls as colors you want to make (team colors, pink and blue for baby showers, wedding colors for a bridal shower, a rainbow for a fun birthday surprise, etc.) and add food coloring to each bowl of batter to get your desired colors.
- Pour half of the batter from each bowl into your first pan.
- Reverse the order and pour the second half of the batter from each bowl into the second pan.
- Bake both cakes according to package directions.
- Once cooled, frost one of your cakes with white frosting. Place the second cake on top and cover it with white frosting as well.
Fun Tip:
To create the look of the frosting in the example:
- Color a couple bowls of frosting in chosen colors.
- Create circles of colors on top of your white frosting.
- Starting from the center, drag the point of a knife through the frosting toward the outer edge of the cake.
- Wipe your knife clean and drag it from the outside of the cake to the center, about an inch or two away from your first drag line.
- Repeat this process all the way around the cake.
