Decorating a new apartment or dorm room... or maybe just looking for a fresh update for your home? You can get a cool, modern look, even on a tight budget! Turn last night's mac and cheese and that empty cereal box into your own works of art with self-adhesive shelf liner. Plus, the covered boxes are light enough for you to use masking tape or picture hanging putty (both found at Dollar Tree!) to hang them, leaving your security deposit nice and safe!
Shop at Dollar Tree – Here's What You'll Need:
- Empty boxes That Have Nice, Crisp Corners
(Such as cereal, pasta, or cracker boxes)
- Decorative Self-Adhesive Shelf Liner
- Tape
- Picture Hanging Putty (optional)
Easy Step-by-Step Directions:
- Lay out your boxes on a flat work surface to figure out which boxes you want to use and which way they'll hang on the wall.
- Tape closed any open flaps on the boxes.
- Roll out the shelf liner and measure the amount you need by placing the first box so it centers on the section of the design you want. Make sure there is enough area around the edges to wrap around the sides and all the way to the back of the box.
- Peel the backing away from the shelf liner about 1" to expose the adhesive (Tip: it's easiest to do this on the narrow side). Starting on the back of the box, square the liner up with the edge, so that it stays on track all the way around the box.
- Slowly peel the backing off while rubbing the exposed adhesive to the box, rubbing out air bubbles as they happen, until you make it back around to the back of the box.
- Much like wrapping a package, press down the short sides of the liner to the sides of the box, then the back (trimming if needed) and then finally the overhang from the front. Repeat on the other side of the box.
- Repeat for the other boxes.
- Use picture hanger putty or tape to attach to your wall in the layout you choose.
Fun Tip:
- If using a patterned liner, use different parts of the design or rotate it for different looks on each box, or use two coordinating patterns or colors.
- If you are concerned the writing on the box will show through a light-colored pattern, use a generous helping of gluestick to adhere white paper to the front of the box, or just do a double layer of liner. Cardstock will give you a nicer surface to adhere the liner to.
- You can also use wrapping paper to cover the boxes — cover each box generously with glue stick (paying special attention to the edges) and smooth paper down all the way around, using your fingertips to crease the paper firmly around the corners.
