Aetna is the brand name for insurance products issued by the subsidiary insurance companies controlled by Aetna Inc. The Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are insured by First Health Life and Health Insurance Company, an Aetna Company (Aetna).

Not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. Government or the Federal Medicare Program. This is a solicitation of insurance. Contact may be made by an insurance agent or insurance company. The Medicare Supplement Plans are guaranteed renewable as long as the required premium is paid before the end of each grace period. The policies have exclusions, limitations, terms under which the policy may be continued in force or discontinued. Plans do not pay benefits for any service and supply of a type not covered by Medicare, including but not limited to dental care or treatment, eyeglasses and hearing aids. The TRS-Care Program is designed uniquely for retired Texas public school employees. It is separate and distinct from both the TRS Pension Trust Fund and from any program providing health care benefits to actively employed public school employees. You should carefully consider any decision made with regards to your health benefits and coordinate your final decision with TRS

At this time, you don’t have to enroll in a TRS-Care Medicare Advantage plan, and you may disenroll from the plan at any time. In most situations, retirees and surviving spouses can’t re-enroll in TRS-Care. However, retirees and surviving spouses may re-enroll in TRS-Care if they have a special enrollment event, which are rare.

We encourage you to review all aspects of a plan when you compare TRS-Care plans and the Aetna/TRTA individual plans. Simply having lower premiums may not give a full picture of what a plan offers. On the medical side, the TRS-Care Medicare Advantage plan is likely to be more flexible and could provide lower out-of-pocket costs in the long run, The TRS-Care Medicare prescription drug coverage is also likely richer than other market options you may consider. You will need to consider both the financial and access issues as part of your decision.

You must maintain Medicare coverage, including Medicare Part B coverage, to participate in the TRS-Care plan or if you plan to Opt-Out of your TRS Benefit. You risk losing all TRS-Care coverage if you do not have Medicare Part B coverage.

Per TRS: If you opt out this plan, you will be disenrolled from TRS-Care. If you don’t want to be in TRSCare on Jan. 1, 2018, you have until Nov. 9, 2017 to opt out of your coverage by calling TRS Health and Insurance Benefits at 1-888-237-6762 (Dial Relay Texas 711), Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Central Time. If you notify TRS after that time, you’ll receive ID cards in the mail that you can disregard. You do have the option to cancel your TRS-Care coverage any time throughout the year.

You may contact TRS by mail or telephone. You may also schedule to meet with a benefit counselor in TRS’ Austin office, or limited cities statewide (see the TRS website for locations). Please schedule appointments well in advance. You can also register for group presentations in numerous locations across the state (see the TRS website for locations).
